The last mahadevi
The story of Inge Sargent, the last Mahadevi of Burma's Shan region. Born in Austria, after WWII Inge Eberhard studied in the US, where she met Burmese student San Kya Seng. Newly married, Inge travelled back home with Seng only to discover that he was the ruling Prince of Shan, a Burmese region with its own language and culture. As Seng and his new wife set about implementing new economic and educational reforms, a 1962 military coup saw Seng arrested and probably murdered. Inge managed to escape with her two daughters, and resettled in Denver, Colorado. After remarrying to Tad Sargent, Inge founded a nonprofit group to aid Burmese refugees from the country's brutal regime.
